Parents of the couple are Douglas and Karen Garvin of Cedar Falls, the late Linda Barger Smith, Gordon Smith, and Thomas and Joyce Hoffman of Cincinnati. Vows were exchanged at 3 p.m. in a garden ceremony at the home of Paul and Mildred Barger, grandparents of the bride.

He began teaching in 1922 as superintendent of Baker Consolidated High School in North Dakota, and taught at Decorah High School where he organized the first high school band in 1925. He was elected Winneshiek Superintendent of Schools in 1933.

During his administration, he reorganized the school district and North Winneshiek Community and Turkey Val-, ley Community School District were formed. Stoen retired in 1964. He is a life member of the National Education Association and State Education Association. He received the Luther College Achievement Award in 1964. The honoree requests no gifts.
