Renewing and new season ticket holders will have the first opportunity to reserve tickets for "A Christmas Carol," which last year sold out prior to its opening. A variety of discounted season ticket packages are available, including a dent season ticket and a special offer for senior citizens. Season tickets for preview performances are also available at a lower cost than regular season tickets.

Minn. New Guthrie Theater Artistic Director Alvin Epstein will direct the opening production of the 1971-79 season, Henrik Ibsen's "The Pretenders," scheduled to open June 1. A significant change from the Guthrie's usual revolving repertory, in addition to the month-long run' of "A Christmas Carol," will occur when the season's final production, John Gay's musical "The Beggar's Opera," opens in late January for a straight run until the season closes in late February. The season Is as follows: the American premiere of "The Pretenders," the world premiere of "Teibeie and her Demon" by Isaac Bashevis Singer and Eve Friedman, opens June "Boy Meets Girl" by Bella and Samuel Spewack, opens June 21; the U.S. professional premiere of la.

Bonjour" by Michel Freddy Fender at Freddy Fender will be performing his unique brand of country rock March 4 at Big Country. The first show will begin between 8:30 and 9 p.m. He will start the second show between 11:30 p.m. and midnight. Fender, who was bom in a Texas border town, has been in the music business for 20 years.

He had two hits in the late fifties and early sixties, "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights," and "Crazy, Crazy, Baby." nationally-known. This five-man group continues to draw rock fans to its concerts, of which there were 240 last year, playing to about 750,000 people. 31. Gogol's 19th century Russian comedy classic "Marriage" will be staged by a guest director from the Soviet Union, Anatoly Efros of Moscow's Malaya Bron-naya Theater. His visit to Minneapolis is part of this fall's upcoming "Festival of Russian 19th Century Arts" in the Twin Cities area. Guthrie season ticket holders will again have the opportunity to see seven plays for the price of five. in the UNI Auditorium. Spiva Art Center opens exhibition The Spiva Art Center in Joplin, will sponsor its 28th annual May Competitive Exhibit from May 8 through 28. Cash awards of $500 and approximately 10 purchase awards will be available. The exhibition is open to adult artists who live in or do the majority of their work in the U.S. A maximum of four entries per artist may be submitted in paintings, graphics and sculpture.

The Kantorei will follow up the concert with a performance at the South Bend campus of Indiana University on Saturday.

Other appearances outside Iowa City this spring will be at First Presbyterian Church in Davenport March 31 and at the Music Educators National Conference in Chicago April 12. The professorship is supported by the Iowa Measurement Research Foundation. Graduate students and faculty from art. dance, English, music, speech and dramatic art, and the College of Education will participate in the seminar.

Way has worked actively with teachers and children in creative drama and the related arts. In addition to his work in England where he founded and directed Theatre Centre. and the Drama Advisory Service to provide assistance to teachers he has conducted lecture workshops in several countries including the United States, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden. His book. "Development Through Drame," has been translated into five languages and he is also the author of over 50 plays for children's theater.
