Residents visiting cemeteries report thefts a Police say residents decorating graves had items stolen from cars. By JEFF REINITZ Courier Staff Writer WATERLOO Police are asking residents to use caution when visit cemeteries this coming Memorial Day holiday. Over the past several months, residents have had property stolen from their cars during cemetery visits. "Police are investigating reports from citizens who have had purses and other items taken from their unlocked cars," said Capt. Bruce Arends with the Waterloo Police Department.

The most recent theft happened Thursday morning at Fairview Cemetery at 611 Fairview Avenue. Two Waterloo women told officers they were at the cemetery between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Johnson County attorney to step down in two years Some of J. Patrick White's cases got national attention. IOWA CITY (AP) Johnson County Attorney J.

Patrick White, whose career put him at the center of some of the state's most visible criminal cases, announced he will step down when his sixth term expires in January 2007. White, who will be 66 when his term ends, said he wants to spend more time with his family and pursue other interests. White said he announced his intentions early to give others interested in the job time to prepare. "Id like to slow down a bit and try something different for a while," said White, who was first elected county attorney in 1982. "This hasn't been an easy decision because I love every aspect of the job." During his tenure, White was involved in a series of cases that gained state and national attention.

In 1991, his office investigated a shooting spree at the University of Iowa campus, involving disgruntled researcher Gang Lu. On Nov. 1, the physics doctoral graduate opened fire, killing three professors, a fellow graduate student and an administrator before shooting himself. Years later, White led the prosecution against Jonathan Memmer, who was convicted in 2001 and sentenced to two life terms for the slayings of two women whose bodies were discovered in a 1999 explosion and fire at an Iowa City apartment. White, who underwent bypass surgery in 2002, was also the first county prosecutor in Iowa to seek victim restitution in a murder case, a provision that was later formalized by the Legislature.
