Supervisors will consider funds for DPT clinic By RON De CHRISTOPHER Courier Staff Writer Nearly $25,000 needed to establish a mass-immunization clinic for Black Hawk County children will be considered by the Board of Supervisors Tuesday. The county Health Department is seeking $24,783 from the supervisors for the clinic, which would dispense DPT vaccine.

The vaccine protects people from diphtheria, whooping cough and tetanus. Vaccines to fight polio, measles, mumps and rubella also would be administered at the clinic. Health Department Director Tom O'Rourke said public immunization clinics have become necessary, because of the high cost of DPT shots administered by private physicians. O'Rourke said liability claims against drug companies have boosted the cost of privately provided vaccine, making it too expensive for many parents. He said the state, which obtains DPT at reduced cost under a federal contract, gives it to public clinics.

Most of the money sought from the supervisors would be used to pay the clinic's staff. The rest would be used to buy supplies and pay office expenses. could open by mid- or late-July. O'Rourke said the clinic, if needed, He has projected an increasing need for vaccination throughout the summer. The clinic would vaccinate 4,241 to 8,524 children, according to O' Rourke's estimate.

The clinic would be in the county Health Department at 1407 Independence where walk-in patients and those referred by physicians would be treated. "This is just one more phase in bringing the facilities together." he explained. "'The entire financial systems are being married into one." St. Francis and Schoitz consolidated operations in 1985. The hospitals began working on merging their data-processing systems in March on a "planned process." Raker said. "'The basic reason is to gain some efficiencies" and to provide "more controlled billing" he added.

About 12 business office employees were formerly located at each hospital. Raker said. With the merger, about 20 now are located at Schoitz, with the remainder at St. Francis. Although no staff reductions are planned, Raker said the center does expect to reduce the number of business office employees through attrition.

Raker said the move should not affect services to patients at each hospital, although St. Franics patients will have their bills mailed from Schoitz..
