14,1980. She worked in her father-in-law's jewelry store in Joplin, and then opened Newton's Jewelry with her husband in 1946 in Waterloo. She was also president of Eurasia Diamond a wholesale subsidiary of Newton's. Survived by: two daughters, Sherryl Newton of Pauline Newton WATERLOO Brian Jeremy Rad, 21, of Waterloo, formerly of Ossian, died Friday, Sept. 15, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Fort Atkinson.

He was born Nov. 20, 1973, in Decorah, the son of Paul F. and Carolyn C. Evans Rael. Mr.

Rael was a 1992 graduate of South Winneshiek High School. He was employed by Omega cabinets in Waterloo. He was an E-4 specialist in the U.S. Army Reserve Company 389th Engineering Battalion in Decorah. Survivors include: his parents of Ossian; three brothers Paul Rael Jr.

and Chad P. Rael of Waterloo and Jason S. Rapl of Rochester, a sister Sarah Mossman of Cedar Rapids; and his paternal grandmother Feliciano Rael of Questa, N.M. Preceded in death by: his maternal grandparents, Myron and Margaret Evans and his paternal grandfather Soriada Rael. Services: will be 11 a.m.

Tuesday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery in Ossian. Military rites will be conducted by the U.S. Army Reserves; friends may call after 3 p.m. on Monday at Schmitz Funeral Home in Ossian, where a rosary and scripture service will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Ahles, 78, of 106 Eldene Court, died Thursday, Sept. 14, at Covenant Medical Center, Water Waterloo and Jeanne Schoborg of Whitten; three grandchildren; and three brothers, Bill Porter of Garden Grove, Bob Porter of Portland, and Ken Porter of Seattle. Cheney, 86, of Waterloo, formerly of Osage, died Thursday, Sept. 14, at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, after a heart attack. He was born Aug. 12, 1909, in rural Orchard, son of George V. and Lina May Gage Cheney.

He married Evelyn Smith March 11, 1939, in Waterloo. Mr. Cheney served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European theater, and was employed as a general maintenance man in Osage until retiring in 1993. Survived by: his wife, Evelyn; a daughter Lina Marie Taber of Waterloo; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren; Memorial services: will be 1:30 p.m.

Tuesday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with inurnment in Stillwater Cemetery, rural Orchard; graveside military rites conducted by Osage Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7920; there will be no visitation. LA PORTE CITY Tillie B. Birch, 88, of Colonial Manor, formerly of 805 Benton died Thursday, Sept. 14, at Colonial Manor of natural causes. She was born April 22, 1907, in Hardin County, daughter of Emil and Hannah Jass Tietz.

She married Ross Birch Feb. 3, 1936, in Galena, 111; he died in April 1988. Mrs. Birch had owned and operated a cafe in La Porte City. Survived by: a sister, Savilla Vinton of Eldora.

Preceded in death by: her husband; a sister, Irene Nichols; and two half brothers, Mike and Ed Zielskc. Services: will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Huisman Funeral Home, with burial in West View Cemetery, both in La Porte City. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 9 a.m.

Burtlow of Waterloo; six brothers, Harold and Vernon, both of Denver, John, Harry and Robert, all of Waterloo, and Ray of Grover, and four sisters, Viola Krebs, Darlene Sherwood and Florence Tovar, all of both of Waterloo, and Peggy Robbins of Long Beach, Calif. 8, at Health One Buffalo Hospital in Buffalo, Minn. He was born May 23, 1912, in Shipman, III, son of Clement and Florence Leatherby Hilyard. He married Dorothee Goepel Oct. 15, 1940, in Nashua. Mr.

Hilyard owned and operated Clearwater Hardware from 1954 until retiring in 1976. He had also been a member of the Clearwater school board and the Clearwater Fire Department. Survived by: his wife; two daughters, Sandra Dingwall of Waconia, and Sherry Michel of Colorado Springs, two grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; two sisters, Dorothy Arend of Algona and Fern Olson of Beloit, and a brother, Richard of Waterloo. Preceded in death by: a brother, Lewis. Services: a private burial will take place in Iowa; Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel, Monticello, was in charge of arrangements.

Waterloo M. Leora Kriegermeier, 79, of 4529 winghaven Drive, died Saturday, Sept. 16, at Covenant Medical Center of complications of Parkinson's disease. Evelyn Sapp Frederick L. Biene and Irene Clabby Biene.

She graduated from St. Mary's in 1934. Mrs. Pearson worked in the bookkeeping department at John Deere Company prior to her marriage to John Raymond Pearson in Waterloo on Oct. 11,1947.

Survived by: her husband, John Raymond; two sons, John Raymond Jr. of Waterloo and Michael Patrick of Oasis, Iowa; and two daughters, Patricia Ann Lewis of Chicago and Susan Kay Pearson of Waterloo; two brothers, Chaplain (Col.) Elwyn L. Bierie (Ret.) of Bull Shoals, and Major Thomas E. Bierie (Ret.) of Hampton, and a Genevieve Pearson sister, Margaret A. French, also of Bull Shoals, five grandchildren, Caycee and Zachary Pearson of Waterloo, and Joshua, Kate and Aric Pearson of Oasis, Iowa.

Preceded in death by: a sister, Lucille M. Mount of Waterloo. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, at St.

John's Catholic Church, with burial following in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call today from 2 to 8 p.m. at O'Keefe Towne-Grarup Waychoff Funeral Home, where there will be a 3 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. vigil.

23, 1991. Mrs. Kriegermeier taught in southern Iowa for a number of years and was children's librarian at the Marion Public Library. Survived by: four daughters, Sue Davis of Versailles, Alice Baker of Waterloo, Jean Thompson of Iowa City and Marie Busier of Seneca, seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Frances Hartzler of Bloomfield. Preceded in death by: her husband; a brother Waterloo, and Edna Briscoe of Tucson, Ariz.

Preceded in death by: an infant son, Russell Chris Sapp; a brother, Herbert; and a sister, Margaret Springer. Services: will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Memorials: may be directed to the family. CEDAR FALLS Dr. Fred W. Lott III, 52, of Jackson, formerly of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, Sept. 12, at home of natural causes.

He was born Aug. 21, 1943, in San Mateo, son of Fred Jr. and Kathryn Deever Lott. He married Marilyn Spear in 1983 in Wilkes-Barre, they were later divorced. He received a bachelor's degree from Carleton College, Northfield, in 1964, and a master's in 1966 and a doctorate in 1978 from the University of California at Berkeley.

He was an assistant professor of physics at Wilkes College in Pennsylvania, Weber State College in Utah, Florida A University in Tallahassee and, since 1990, at Jackson State University in Mississippi. He also was a research assistant at Fermilab, Batavia, 111., and a guest scientist at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. Survived by: his parents, of Cedar Falls; and two sisters, Diana Anderson of West Des Moines and Patricia Lott of Seattle. Services: will be 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, with burial in Fairview Cemetery.

She was a cook in food preparation for many years. Survived by: three sons, Jens Paul of St. Paul, Kenneth E. of Waterloo and Harry Lee of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Ane Marie Krueger of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. 6, 1927, in rural Cedar Falls, son of Clarence A. and Susan I. Andorf Gutknecht. He married Thclma Bauer Feb. 20, 1948, in rural Hudson.

Mr. Gutknecht served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1947 and farmed in rural Cedar Falls. Survived by: his wife; a son, Bill Jr. of rural Cedar Falls; two daughters, Barbara Kay Boyer and Sharon A.

Bauer, both of Brandon; seven grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and four sisters, Doris Clarke, Alice Brandhorst and Donna Dufel, all of Hudson, and Mary Bauer of Cedar Falls.
