I Frank Sole i Carol Gill SIOUX CITY (AP) Starting a new church is a challenge, said the Rev.

Linda Butler of Spirit of the Hills United Methodist Church in Sioux City. Butler is in the process of forming Spirit of the Hills United Methodist Church, which is equipping Christians through small-group ministry and study of the Bible. She said it is an inclusive church, welcoming of all people. "We celebrate the diversity of race, gender, age, lifestyle or whatever," she wrote in the new church brochure. Instead of starling with a building and welcoming new members, the church is finding its members.

Eventually, once they have become a cohesive group and have a clear vision, they'll build on land the church now owns near Sioux City East High School. The church's vision: "We are committed in the way of Jesus to struggle for justice, compassion and life-giving spirituality for all people. God has called us to reach the un-churched and de-churched of Siouxland by providing small groups, diversity in worship and knowledge of spiritual gifts." While many denominations start churches with individuals who come to a community for a year or two and then move on, that's not the way Spirit of the Hills church is being formed. Butler, with some help from her husband who is a retired Methodist minister, is doing the job with training from United Methodist Church. This is Butler's third career and her second vocation, she said.

She began her first career, hich she also said was a vocation, as a teacher. Butler earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education and behavioral sciences from Amherst College in Woodstock, Conn. She then taught sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade math for nearly 10 years in Connecticut and New Jersey. "When I was 5, 1 fell in love with my kindergarten teacher and I wanted to grow up and be like her," she said. "1 planned my whole life according- iy" Then she went into sales, working for Bell Atlantic in New Jersey, for EDS and for Infonet as director of sales.

That was her second career. One night, walking through Times Square in New York on her way to catch a bus, she noticed a number of homeless people. While homeless people are a common sight in New York City, she particularly noticed them that night. "I had the sense that if I was going to be a full-time minister, I needed to minister to the least of these," she said. "I thought, don't know if I can do I was lost in thought and when I looked up a man, who looked homeless, was smiling at me.

He just smiled and said, It was a sudden epiphany." Butler went to Drew University in Madison, N.J., a United Methodist Church seminary where she earned a master's degree in divinity. When she was about to be ordained, Butler looked at a number of different areas of the country and interview ed both in Minnesota and Iowa. She chose Iowa and received an appointment from the district superintendent to be in Sioux City for the long run, starting the new church.
