The accountants on call group commissioned the survey that asked workers if they would choose a different line of work if they were starting all over again.

Of those polled, 51 percent said they would seek a different line of work. The survey is part of the accountants on call Profiles of the American Worker series. Of the rest of the respondents, 44 percent had no desire to change occupations, and 5 percent had no answer or did not know. Those most likely to wish for a change were employed in clerical, sales or manual jobs and were with the company two years or less. Respondents most likely to choose the same line of work were those in professionalbusiness occupations and with the same company for more than 10 years.

The most significant factor in the results was length of employment. Of those employed two or fewer years, 59 percent would choose a different career. However, about 44 percent of those in the same line for 10 or more years would look for a new occupation. A sample of 680 adults, 18 and older, who work either full or part time took part in the survey. The margin of error in the results is plus or minus five percentage points.
