Ginny Swenson ANDREW WIND andrew.wind@wcfcourier.com CEDAR FALLS A $101.08 million 2017-18 budget, including a 21.86 percent increase in property tax collections, will come before the Board of Education Monday for final approval. A public hearing on the budget will be held when the board meets at 7 p.m. in the council chambers of City Hall, 220 Clay St. Overall tax collections would total $27.51 million during the fiscal year starting July 1, up from $22.57 million currently. The tax boost comes as Cedar Falls Community Schools begins repaying a $32 million bond issue voters approved last April.

The bonds will be used to upgrade two elementary schools and build a new one. The proposed tax rate of $14.27 per $1,000 of taxable value represents an increase of about $1.50. Of that, $1.19 per $1,000 of taxable value is due to repayment of the bonds. On a $100,000 home, the property owner would pay $750.15, an increase of $102.35. The owner of a $250,000 home would pay $1,969.16, or $255.87 more.

The budget includes $31.67 million in supplemental state aid, $131,679 in instructional support state aid, $740,578 in commercial and indus trial state tax replacement, and $4.99 million in other state sources. In other business, the board will: Hold a public hearing on a budget amendment in three areas for the current fiscal year with approval slated for later in the meeting. Budgets would be increased from $40.7 million to $41.44 million under instruction and from $16.39 million to $17.01 million under support services, both for technology equipment and staffing related to the teacher leadership compensation grant from the state. The line item would be increased from $12.36 million to $34.91 million for debt refinancing and construction projects. Approve a 2017-18 contract with the Cedar Falls Educational Support Professionals to increase base wages by 26 cents per hour and boost hourly wages by 35 cents for current employees.

The overall increase to the district for returning employees totals 2.9 percent, including its contributions to Social Security, Medicare, and the retirement plan. Hold a public hearing on Orchard Hill Elementary proposed new playground equipment, which has an expected cost of $120,000. Cedar Falls School Board takes up budget approval.
